The award-winning The Ashes of Aquitaine is an historical drama set against the tragic and tumultuous final days of King Henry II of England. Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, the king’s estranged and imprisoned wife, is suddenly tasked with arranging a truce between her ailing husband and their rebellious sons, Richard and John. Richard has allied himself with Philip Augustus, the young and ambitious king of France, and is now marching on Henry with a massive army. John is a drunken wastrel, who sees the struggle as a means to seize the throne for himself. Eleanor detests Henry, and only the promise of freedom will entice the bitter and aging queen to accept her sister’s appeal on Henry’s behalf to forgive him. Their rancorous sparring threatens not only the coveted peace, but Henry’s ever-weakening health. Beneath her hatred lies the powerful love they shared when Eleanor and Henry first ascended the throne—before betrayal, resentment and the power of the crown destroyed it. $20 Single Use Copyright Fee plus $60 Royalty per Performance for Amateur Theatre.
