G. BRUCE SMITH
Biography
G. Bruce Smith is the author of 20-plus plays of various lengths and two screenplays and has production credits in California and Minnesota. His most recent full-length play, BUTTERFLY WINGS, which was commissioned by Santa Monica College (Calif.), was produced in 2008.
He has won several playwriting awards from such organizations as the Ashland (Ore.) New Plays Festival and the Long Beach (Calif.) Playhouse. Most recently, his play CANVAS won the 2007 New Play Festival (One-Act category) at the Chameleon Theatre Circle in Burnsville, Minn.
His play THE LAST PITCH won the 2000 National Playwriting Award from the American Renegade Theatre in North Hollywood and had an 11-week run in 2001, garnering “Pick of the Week” in L.A. Weekly. THE LAST PITCH was also produced in fall 2006 in Austin, Minn.
His PLEASURE POD at Celebration Theatre in Hollywood was part of a collection of one-acts that received “Recommended” in the Los Angeles Times and L.A. Weekly. His CHRISTMAS WITH THE MITCHELLS, also a one-act produced at Celebration in 2002, received rave reviews and was a finalist in the 2003 GLAAD L.A. Outstanding Theatre Awards.
He is a founding member of Playwrights 6, one of an elite group of playwright-managed theater companies in Los Angeles. A former journalist, Bruce has written for the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Daily News, and other publications.
